Two excellent tours and limited time. Faced with this situation, a lot of tourists have a decision to make: visit the world-famous yet massive Guinness Storehouse or the more personalized yet smaller scale Jameson Distillery. Whilst visiting both tours, I have experienced the main differences and will guide you on finding the right fit for you.
The Guinness Storehouse
Probably the most famous tour of the two mentioned above is the Guinness Storehouse. The impressive Guinness factories are seen throughout the entire “Guinness” neighborhood and have a very peculiar building structure. When arriving at the Storehouse, you’ll witness an immense stream of people getting in and out and I understand why. This four-stories big museum has so much to do and see. First, you will learn all you need to know about pouring the perfect pint of Guinness, which you can later on bring into practice at the Guinness Academy. Second, there is an entire floor dedicated to Guinness’ advertising activities -which is even interesting for people who have no affinity with marketing or whatsoever. Third, Dublin’s finest rooftop bar is situated on the highest floor of the Guinness Storehouse with views that reach until the Wicklow Mountains on a sunny day. And last but not least, you can spend as much time as you want wandering this massive beer museum and, afterwards, its fun gift shop.
The Jameson Distillery
The Jameson Distillery can be found on the other side of the Liffey river and is definitely worth a visit. Both for people who are into whiskey and for those who can’t tell the difference between a single, double or triple distilled whiskey. For me, the unique selling point of the Jameson Distillery is the personalized tour throughout the history of the Irish whiskey label. Jameson has been through some hard times during Ireland’s fight for independence, which part of the tour is dedicated to. The tour also includes a whiskey (blind) tasting, where you taste the Jameson whiskey and two other famous whiskey labels. Afterwards, you can enjoy even more drinks in their trendy bar, which is even worth going to when you’re not visiting the distillery.
The right fit for you
First of all, are you a beer lover or a whiskey expert? Most likely this will influence your decision majorly. Apart from that, it’s mostly choosing between the picture perfect Guinness Storehouse and the raw Jameson Distillery. If you have a little more time in Dublin, I’d recommend visiting both!
